The Unseen Easter Journey

The Unseen Easter Journey

292: James and Holland are back with Pastor Plek to share their different Easter Sunday church experiences. Holland and James offer their personal insights on how even a no-show baptism and an unexpected car accident couldn't overshadow the celebration of Jesus's resurrection and the impactful outreach at Elm Ridge apartments. As they navigate the complex journey of shepherding culturally Christian individuals towards authentic faith, they grapple with the delicate balance of addressing sin with love and grace. Listen in for a conversation that's as real and raw as ministry itself, anchored in the hope and challenges that define our calling.

00:00:05.129 --> 00:00:06.131
Welcome Holland.

00:00:06.131 --> 00:00:06.854
Thank you so much.

00:00:07.160 --> 00:00:13.695
And straight out of Huddo to Taylor, is James Foster, how you doing.

00:00:13.996 --> 00:00:14.358
I'm doing great.

00:00:14.519 --> 00:00:16.146
Man, great, having both you guys back.

00:00:16.146 --> 00:00:16.949
It's super fun.

00:00:16.949 --> 00:00:29.710
We are now a couple days we're recording this, a couple days post-Easter, and I wanted to hear about how your Easter Sundays went at your uh each of your churches, and uh what you're looking forward to in the future.

00:00:29.710 --> 00:00:34.712
So, holando, what did, what did you think about, uh Easter, how did that go?

00:00:37.780 --> 00:00:38.301
It was okay.

00:00:38.301 --> 00:00:44.843
Here's what's great about it Jesus rose from the dead, that's right, and we got to preach that.

00:00:44.843 --> 00:00:45.963
Uh, there was a lot.

00:00:45.963 --> 00:00:48.014
We had a lot of struggles in our Easter service.

00:00:48.014 --> 00:00:50.023
What was the primary struggle in the service?

00:00:50.023 --> 00:00:51.347
The pri?

00:00:51.347 --> 00:01:19.015
Some of the primary struggles were my youngest children, who, uh are, my kids are awesome and but, uh, but on Sundays, especially Sundays where Jenny and I are both doing a lot, they exploit that, the reality that we, you know that they can be more mischievous and run around, and they know that we're focused on other things and they exploit that.

00:01:19.180 --> 00:01:21.227
So were they screaming during the service?

00:01:21.227 --> 00:01:22.108
Was that the?

00:01:22.581 --> 00:01:32.164
A little bit during the service, a lot before, a lot after the easter egg hunt after church that my wife spent a ton of time setting up for and everything and made you know this great easter egg hunt.

00:01:32.164 --> 00:01:38.308
All the kids including mine probably started by mine ended up crying and was it sympathetic crying.

00:01:38.308 --> 00:01:41.340
I don't know, I wasn't out there, I didn't see it, so you got.

00:01:41.340 --> 00:01:44.629
But uh, there was lots of crying, is what I heard Lots of crying.

00:01:44.829 --> 00:01:55.447
Oh man, there were certain eggs that had like a dollar in it and the kid, even if they got one, they wanted two dollars, or they didn't get the candy they wanted, or I don't know.

00:01:55.447 --> 00:01:59.262
The kids were losing their minds at the Easter egg hunt and so, yeah, hey, your.

00:01:59.322 --> 00:02:01.149
Easter egg hunt was way better than our Easter egg hunt.

00:02:01.149 --> 00:02:05.900
Anytime there's money involved.

00:02:05.921 --> 00:02:06.783
I would have been on your Easter egg hunt.

00:02:06.802 --> 00:02:07.584
Well, it leads to children crying.

00:02:07.584 --> 00:02:08.605
Lesson learned, lesson learned.

00:02:08.605 --> 00:02:12.693
How long is the actual egg hunt part of your Easter egg hunt?

00:02:12.993 --> 00:02:15.638
I think it was like 45 seconds to a minute long, okay.

00:02:15.781 --> 00:02:17.347
So that resulted in a lot of crying.

00:02:17.347 --> 00:02:20.423
Okay, did you guys do anything else other than Easter egg hunt?

00:02:20.423 --> 00:02:22.104
Or did you do like a I don't know a?

00:02:22.705 --> 00:02:22.967
coffee.

00:02:22.967 --> 00:02:24.729
We had a baptism set up on.

00:02:24.729 --> 00:02:28.875
Sunday, which we were really excited about, and um, the person did not make it to church.

00:02:33.300 --> 00:02:35.826
You know, if there's one thing I understand, it's that reality right there that has happened to me more times than I can recall.

00:02:35.847 --> 00:02:37.570
Still haven't heard from them and praying for them.

00:02:37.651 --> 00:02:39.222
Hopefully, hopefully nothing awful happened.

00:02:39.301 --> 00:02:46.175
Yeah, so then then praying for them, uh, another member on our team that was supposed to help set up ended up not being able to make it.

00:02:46.175 --> 00:02:52.227
Another member on the team that was going to help set up their car broke down and they didn't make it to church, and so it's just like all these kind of things.

00:02:52.227 --> 00:02:54.544
Yeah, you know, you, of course.

00:02:54.566 --> 00:02:58.849
Of course I also got in a car accident on the Monday of that week.

00:02:58.849 --> 00:03:00.766
I got hit by a car, just smashed.

00:03:00.766 --> 00:03:06.901
Was it totaled?

00:03:06.901 --> 00:03:07.442
Totaled the car?

00:03:07.442 --> 00:03:07.681
That was.

00:03:07.681 --> 00:03:08.143
How did you get here?

00:03:08.203 --> 00:03:08.503
uh well, we have.

00:03:08.503 --> 00:03:09.526
Praise the lord, we have a van as well.

00:03:09.526 --> 00:03:10.608
Oh man the lord, my lovely wife took me here.

00:03:10.908 --> 00:03:15.330
Oh, she's so great yeah so it was a crazy week, a lot of crazy stuff happening then.

00:03:15.330 --> 00:03:22.129
Sunday morning was just like a lot of chaos, but all of that said, at the end of the day we got to preach jesus, uh.

00:03:22.129 --> 00:03:24.001
We got to love and bless our community.

00:03:24.001 --> 00:03:28.866
The day before Easter, we had a big outreach in the community, uh, which was a huge win.

00:03:29.487 --> 00:03:32.943
So uh, at Eastside, is it at Eastside community church?

00:03:32.943 --> 00:03:34.270
We're at mission, possible currently.

00:03:34.573 --> 00:03:39.751
No, at one of the apartment complexes in the community they, uh, we asked if we could do an outreach.

00:03:39.770 --> 00:03:41.021
Can you tell me what community it was?

00:03:41.323 --> 00:03:44.512
Elm Ridge apartments and uh, they, we asked if we could do something there.

00:03:44.512 --> 00:03:49.181
They were what community?

00:03:49.181 --> 00:03:51.126
It was elm rage apartments and uh, they, we asked if we could do something there.

00:03:51.126 --> 00:03:51.867
They were like, oh, we'd love that.

00:03:51.867 --> 00:03:58.812
And not only did they allow us to do it there, but their management came to the event as well as provided like tacos, donuts, waters, capri, suns, bubbles for the kids, like they came and they stayed like the whole time.

00:03:58.812 --> 00:04:03.283
So we really got to connect with the apartment management wow a ton of people came out to the event.

00:04:03.343 --> 00:04:11.962
Got to connect with a lot of families so was it multiple apartment managers or all the apartment managers from that one apartment, from that one and from?

00:04:12.002 --> 00:04:12.424
another one.

00:04:12.424 --> 00:04:14.530
Oh wow, so it was multiple apartments involved.

00:04:14.569 --> 00:04:15.981
Did they share a courtyard or something?

00:04:17.084 --> 00:04:18.408
uh, no, just some of the other.

00:04:18.408 --> 00:04:25.050
One of the other apartment managers heard about the event, just wanted to come, and so that's so great, and so that breeds huge opportunity.

00:04:25.050 --> 00:04:26.052
Yeah, they loved it.

00:04:26.052 --> 00:04:26.920
We got to.

00:04:26.920 --> 00:04:41.093
We did bounce houses, face painting for kids, food, music and got to invite people to church, pray for people, share the gospel and you know conversations with people, and they wanted us to come back and do more events like that.

00:04:41.153 --> 00:04:41.735
That's exciting.

00:04:42.321 --> 00:04:43.266
That was a huge, huge win.

00:04:48.839 --> 00:04:49.583
That's a win, all right.

00:04:49.583 --> 00:04:51.591
So, james, that's what went down on the east side of Austin, texas.

00:04:51.591 --> 00:04:53.420
How was it on the northeast side of the city, in Taylor?

00:04:53.860 --> 00:04:57.365
Yeah, it was great, probably our best service yet.

00:04:57.666 --> 00:04:57.988
Oh yeah.

00:04:58.779 --> 00:05:00.185
I mean biggest service yet.

00:05:01.083 --> 00:05:01.545
How many came out?

00:05:02.060 --> 00:05:05.990
We had 110 unique worshipers.

00:05:06.170 --> 00:05:06.432
Nice.

00:05:07.540 --> 00:05:13.733
And then we had, with our totals, 138 people, 93 adults and 43 kids.

00:05:13.879 --> 00:05:14.944
That's great.

00:05:14.944 --> 00:05:16.528
Yeah, that's really great.

00:05:16.528 --> 00:05:18.307
You should be really excited about that it's amazing, yeah.

00:05:18.307 --> 00:05:24.452
So tell me about how, like because your service started at 4 o'clock, yep.

00:05:24.452 --> 00:05:31.069
So was anybody already Eastered out by the time they got to you, or they had enough in the tank?

00:05:31.069 --> 00:05:32.906
Was this like someone's second or third Easter service?

00:05:32.906 --> 00:05:34.966
There were a couple of double dippers in there.

00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.488
That said they were coming out but did not make it out.

00:05:38.608 --> 00:05:38.870
Oh yeah.

00:05:39.401 --> 00:05:43.247
Which could have been that they were Eastered out or maybe their Easter celebrations just expanded.

00:05:43.247 --> 00:05:43.990
Yeah yeah, which I?

00:05:43.990 --> 00:05:45.810
They were eastered out, or maybe their easter celebrations just expanded.

00:05:45.810 --> 00:05:51.675
Yeah, yeah, uh, which I don't know that you'd compete with as much if you did a morning service, but, uh, afternoon evening service uh works out pretty well most.

00:05:51.875 --> 00:06:02.100
Most of those folks, especially uh are sleepy folks that want a little extra rest you know we have a church that meets here at four o'clock on uh sundays as well.

00:06:02.100 --> 00:06:02.785
It's uh or no.

00:06:02.785 --> 00:06:15.009
They actually meet at no, sorry, they meet at one o'clock, their service ends at four and we're gonna have a another ethiopian church is gonna start meeting here at wow four, nice yeah, I think that's awesome it's kind of fun.

00:06:15.069 --> 00:06:19.685
So you know it is happening, um so all right, so tell me about your easter egg hunt.

00:06:19.685 --> 00:06:21.550
How did we saw pictures looked great.

00:06:21.550 --> 00:06:23.627
Looks like it was a lot of fun yeah, it was great, was great.

00:06:23.646 --> 00:06:23.908
We had um.

00:06:23.908 --> 00:06:26.418
That was probably one of the highlights too.

00:06:26.418 --> 00:06:35.129
Is uh just getting to keep our people there and enjoy them, kind of bring out some other snacks and refreshments and spend some more time with them.

00:06:35.129 --> 00:06:44.927
We were wanting to do like a full on meal, but that's for a future year, yeah it is so hard to coordinate so it is so hard to coordinate.

00:06:44.947 --> 00:06:50.701
So I my and this might just be me we went for the Wednesday sorry Wednesday, I don't know.

00:06:50.701 --> 00:06:51.745
So it was for Saturday.

00:06:51.745 --> 00:06:59.889
We did the Wells branch elementary, which is right around the corner here, and that's where we did the Easter egg hunt, but it was more of like an Easter extravaganza.

00:06:59.889 --> 00:07:03.279
We had none other than our deacon of compassion.

00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:05.567
Aaron Swanland was the easter bunny.

00:07:06.249 --> 00:07:08.062
Uh which was pretty awesome.

00:07:08.281 --> 00:07:13.331
Cody got fired from uh cody got fired, uh, I think when.

00:07:13.932 --> 00:07:18.045
Yeah, he's from easter bunny just from easter bunny, yeah, yeah, he's still, he's still.

00:07:18.045 --> 00:07:22.334
Yeah, yeah, he, he won a trip to hawaii.

00:07:22.334 --> 00:07:27.446
After, uh, he didn't actually win it, they're going to a wedding out in Hawaii, uh, which is pretty great.

00:07:27.446 --> 00:07:41.668
So, but, yeah, he, he went to he I don't think he made it out to the Easter egg hunt this year, but, uh, our deacon of compassion was very compassionate uh on the children and did a great job, staying in character the entire time.

00:07:41.668 --> 00:07:47.922
Um, it was it, cause that's's it's a lot of not, uh, it's a lot of stuffy head that you have to wear.

00:07:47.922 --> 00:07:53.071
Um, but we did have, uh, bunny tail dodgeball.

00:07:53.071 --> 00:08:06.399
We also had the face painting, uh, balloon animals, and we had starbucks and somehow adrian got some really cool snacks anyway, so it worked out.

00:08:06.399 --> 00:08:07.422
It was a fun dodgeball.

00:08:07.422 --> 00:08:12.312
That'd be like the snowball the snowball, so it works for during, uh, we.

00:08:12.432 --> 00:08:14.204
So what's really great about they work for christmas?

00:08:14.204 --> 00:08:17.716
Uh, for our dodgeball during christmas.

00:08:17.716 --> 00:08:23.610
It works for the uh, the camp out that we do every year with the kids at the camp out.

00:08:23.610 --> 00:08:35.403
Where we do, I guess it's snowball dodgeball, and then it became bunny tail dodgeball and I thought for sure a couple guys were going to tear a rotator cuff because they were like really slinging it and we got really competitive.

00:08:35.403 --> 00:08:40.885
When it became adult bunny tail dodgeball Did not think it, courtney Blick wrecked shop once again.

00:08:40.885 --> 00:08:56.476
As you would expect, she does not mess around, you know she's there to win, so, uh, we really gotta appreciate that ended up being a two-hour event, that's amazing uh, which I was sort of surprised by, and my kids were ready to go about a good solid hour.

00:08:56.537 --> 00:08:57.520
15 in they were.

00:08:57.520 --> 00:09:02.753
They were pleading to go and I I had to say, hey, our job is to be the last ones to leave.

00:09:02.753 --> 00:09:05.668
And that did not go over very well.

00:09:05.668 --> 00:09:08.386
We did have a couple meltdowns, um, but that's okay.

00:09:08.386 --> 00:09:09.952
Overall it was a big win.

00:09:10.294 --> 00:09:13.467
But we had about 200, 200 people came to that outreach in that wild right.

00:09:13.467 --> 00:09:14.152
Yeah, it was huge.

00:09:14.272 --> 00:09:15.840
Adrian brought, like our entire neighborhood.

00:09:15.840 --> 00:09:17.244
I don't know how she did it she brought.

00:09:17.244 --> 00:09:24.269
They didn't come to sunday morning, but they did come to the easter egg hunt, so maybe that's just like a you know baby steps.

00:09:24.311 --> 00:09:30.062
Yeah, yeah, no, we had one kid from our outreach, from the outreach that we did uh came to our Easter service.

00:09:30.062 --> 00:09:31.225
No one else did, and so it was.

00:09:31.225 --> 00:09:43.208
Uh, it was one of those, uh, you know, build relationships and uh, like everyone, everyone in the community that we had done outreach with, and we invited them to church, they were like, oh, we'll just, we'll be cooking all day.

00:09:43.208 --> 00:09:50.981
Like all of them were just cooking for Easter parties at their house all day, and so they all had a Sunday plans cooking at their house.

00:09:51.043 --> 00:09:51.845
Yeah, that's interesting.

00:09:51.845 --> 00:09:53.168
That is the thing, though.

00:09:53.168 --> 00:09:55.677
Yep, um yeah.

00:09:56.178 --> 00:09:57.701
Fascinating 4.00 PM service.

00:09:57.701 --> 00:10:01.788
I don't know if that would have changed anything, but yeah maybe do 4.00 PM service on that day.

00:10:02.028 --> 00:10:03.691
That might solve a lot of issues.

00:10:03.910 --> 00:10:06.514
But the one kid that came, she walked, just walked straight there.

00:10:06.514 --> 00:10:08.623
She was like I have to go to church and she walked there.

00:10:08.623 --> 00:10:11.827
Hey, listen, yeah, made it home safe.

00:10:12.009 --> 00:10:17.182
She's fine, that's good, that's good, okay.

00:10:17.182 --> 00:10:18.927
So what did you preach on, james?

00:10:18.927 --> 00:10:21.160
What did you preach on, for the Lord is Risen day?

00:10:21.160 --> 00:10:22.942
What did you pray, john, for the Lord is risen day?

00:10:23.202 --> 00:10:24.624
Yeah, so we looked at the end of Mark.

00:10:24.744 --> 00:10:36.413
So our first sermon series was walking through Mark Did you start like in the fall in October or something in Mark and just like aha All the way through and we did a couple of skipper-oos but we got there.

00:10:36.413 --> 00:10:37.174
What did you skip?

00:10:38.135 --> 00:10:38.996
Like end time stuff.

00:10:38.996 --> 00:10:43.105
Yeah, we'll get there, we'll come back to it, we'll come back to you, know.

00:10:43.125 --> 00:10:44.148
Jesus comes back.

00:10:44.148 --> 00:10:48.024
All right, everyone get over it Moving on Mark 13, mark 14.

00:10:48.224 --> 00:10:49.066
We're a little bit tight.

00:10:49.066 --> 00:10:50.269
Yeah, we did some.

00:10:51.051 --> 00:10:52.332
Surfing Bible, surfing there, yeah.

00:10:52.332 --> 00:10:54.927
We summarized yeah, it's a little summarization.

00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:56.927
We're going to go back to it, though, at some point soon.

00:10:57.086 --> 00:11:04.541
You know, listen, finish mark on Easter.

00:11:04.541 --> 00:11:04.942
Was that the goal?

00:11:04.942 --> 00:11:06.725
Absolutely yeah, yeah, and there's a lot of first year as well.

00:11:06.745 --> 00:11:08.028
I think, yeah, that's amazing.

00:11:08.028 --> 00:11:09.552
Yeah, great place to start.

00:11:09.652 --> 00:11:10.553
Okay, so what was your?

00:11:10.553 --> 00:11:14.107
What was your big takeaway from Mark 15, 16?

00:11:14.268 --> 00:11:21.431
So come back to courageously honor Jesus, and the reason for that is that you see, the disciples are awkwardly absent.

00:11:21.431 --> 00:11:27.004
And then you have the women who are sticking around, but they're watching from afar where Jesus dies.

00:11:27.004 --> 00:11:30.964
And then they see where he's buried and they go to visit the tomb.

00:11:30.964 --> 00:11:38.470
And then we have Joseph of Arimathea, who comes back to courageously honor Jesus Even though he was part of the council.

00:11:38.860 --> 00:11:40.749
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, nice.

00:11:41.884 --> 00:11:45.145
And he says he takes courage to go ask for the body.

00:11:45.145 --> 00:12:03.993
Nice, right, but basically talking about our identity as being restored representatives that we get from Jesus coming back from the dead, nice that allows us to overcome our fear and our failure to then come back to him and serve him as a restored representative.

00:12:04.214 --> 00:12:04.413
Nice.

00:12:04.413 --> 00:12:08.208
So had you preached on anything like this before?

00:12:08.208 --> 00:12:11.221
Was this the kind of the comeback I feel like I've heard that from you somewhere.

00:12:11.221 --> 00:12:12.905
Was that in the mark somewhere?

00:12:13.307 --> 00:12:14.551
uh, when we did mark.

00:12:14.551 --> 00:12:19.671
I pitched this for you to do, but you took a different take oh, that's right, I do remember that, I do.

00:12:19.730 --> 00:12:22.143
I was like this is how this sounds so familiar.

00:12:22.344 --> 00:12:27.071
I was like, like that's what I remember it from yeah, it was not doing it when you suggested it.

00:12:27.071 --> 00:12:28.894
Terrible.

00:12:28.974 --> 00:12:29.434
No, it's good.

00:12:29.434 --> 00:12:36.799
I also used it in my preaching class at Dallas, so this is my second sermon in my preaching two class.

00:12:37.501 --> 00:12:39.308
Oh, I'm glad that you got some use.

00:12:39.308 --> 00:12:44.591
I thought I heard you preach it somewhere.

00:12:44.591 --> 00:12:46.586
No, we actually talked about preaching planning.

00:12:46.586 --> 00:12:47.167
Okay, that's good.

00:12:47.167 --> 00:12:54.871
All right, holland, you did not choose to go to a resurrection story, that's right.

00:12:55.091 --> 00:12:55.592
Well, I did.

00:12:55.592 --> 00:12:57.187
I would say it is a resurrection story.

00:12:57.187 --> 00:13:07.765
We've been in Daniel, so we've been going through the book of Daniel since I can't remember a few months ago and we were in Daniel six for Easter Sunday, which is Daniel and the lion's den.

00:13:07.765 --> 00:13:16.928
So we talked about uh, I explained up front, you know, knew everyone would be like why are we in the old Testament it's Easter supposed to be talking about Jesus and the resurrection?

00:13:17.190 --> 00:13:19.861
Oh, so you went planning they would have some objections.

00:13:20.062 --> 00:13:26.232
Yes, yes, and just addressing it right away, saying that we are going to get to Jesus.

00:13:26.232 --> 00:13:26.874
What'd you say?

00:13:26.874 --> 00:13:33.379
Stop crying, stop crying, stop your crying.

00:13:33.379 --> 00:13:35.980
That, ultimately, the book of Daniel is a book about Jesus, because all the scripture is about Jesus, it all points to him.

00:13:35.980 --> 00:13:43.083
The Old Testament reaches its fulfillment in Christ, the prophecies look forward to Christ, the types and shadows and all these things are pointing to him.

00:13:43.083 --> 00:13:48.232
So down in the lines, then, especially being something pointing forward to the death and resurrection of Jesus.

00:13:48.352 --> 00:14:02.804
So I love that Talked about Daniel himself, and we hit on the theme of courage as well, his courageous faith in refusing to back down from his religious beliefs and practices, continuing to pray even though the King said you'll be thrown to the lions.

00:14:02.845 --> 00:14:46.909
So he demonstrated great courage and faith there, and we've talked a lot about that theme, of the example of Daniel and his friends in that book, of what it looks like to live out your faith in a hostile culture, how that applies to us today, but also looked at Daniel as a type of Christ and so his being, uh, uh, will it willingly accepting death, um, going into the lion's den and then, uh, being miraculously delivered from death, uh, that, the you know, the King goes down the next morning and, uh, and Daniel's alive, right, god sent the angel to shut the mouths of the lions, and there's even this idea he goes into the lion's den and it's a stone is rolled in front and sealed, you know, and so there's this same kind of idea.

00:14:46.909 --> 00:14:56.664
And then the stones rolled away and Daniel comes out the next day, and so, talking about how this points forward to Jesus's death, he actually died, though Daniel was spared from death.

00:14:56.664 --> 00:14:57.705
Jesus actually died.

00:14:58.639 --> 00:15:00.547
And he only had to do one night in a tomb.

00:15:00.547 --> 00:15:01.870
Jesus had to do three.

00:15:02.360 --> 00:15:05.048
So Jesus is the greater Daniel, essentially.

00:15:05.089 --> 00:15:05.650
I like that.

00:15:05.650 --> 00:15:07.880
Oh, that's really good yeah, so talked about.

00:15:07.880 --> 00:15:26.908
I like the christocentric viewpoint on that, because sometimes it's hard to see how it becomes like because you know, my tendency is I'm daniel and then like, when you read it with like a christ centered view, it's oh, jesus is the hero, he's down, and then I am the guy plotting his death yeah, I, and I think there's value in both, though.

00:15:26.948 --> 00:15:32.811
I think, I think Daniel has met, you know, like passages, like the Hebrews, like, you know, hall of faith and stuff.

00:15:32.811 --> 00:15:33.371
We have these.

00:15:33.371 --> 00:15:38.725
We have these great examples that ought to instruct us in how here's what it looks like to live faithfully.

00:15:38.725 --> 00:15:46.452
But we also, you know, need to recognize we can learn from that, but we also need to recognize how it points us to Christ and salvation him.

00:15:51.100 --> 00:15:51.461
So, yeah, I have a.

00:15:51.461 --> 00:15:52.947
Yeah, that's good, I think that's where I'm always looking for that.

00:15:52.947 --> 00:15:57.000
And sometimes I have a hard time and I'm like, well, I guess I'm too me centered, I'm ready to get whatever.

00:15:57.000 --> 00:16:07.774
Um, uh, I went from the standpoint of uh, the three responses to the gospel message which you know whenever the women come back from the tomb.

00:16:07.774 --> 00:16:18.979
And then Luke 24, verse 13, I think, says and they sounded like, what they said to them sounded like an idle tale.

00:16:18.979 --> 00:16:22.547
And so Peter's response says but Peter.

00:16:22.547 --> 00:16:35.759
The next verse is but Peter rose and ran to the tomb, so his response to the gospel was to verify gospel truth, whereas the rest of the disciples like, all right, well, that's interesting.

00:16:36.341 --> 00:16:41.490
And then Cleopas and his buddy, they head off, uh to uh to Emmaus.

00:16:41.490 --> 00:16:45.725
They got things to do, like they don't have time to check out an empty tomb or look up scripture.

00:16:45.725 --> 00:16:53.485
And, granted, they didn't have a Bible, probably a handy, you know, carrying one in your pocket or anything, and they they'd have to go to the, to the synagogue or somewhere.

00:16:53.485 --> 00:16:56.304
But they just like, well, I guess there's nothing we can do.

00:16:56.304 --> 00:16:57.846
Let's go back to our old lives.

00:16:57.846 --> 00:17:02.587
And it had the, the gospel it was interesting to talk about.

00:17:02.587 --> 00:17:11.111
It'd be make for a great Bible study, uh, up until the point where Jesus meets them and then they run back to Jerusalem to go connect with other disciples.

00:17:11.111 --> 00:17:14.410
And then I had Thomas who demanded proof.

00:17:14.410 --> 00:17:17.626
He was like a guy that was like I'm not going to believe unless I see.

00:17:17.626 --> 00:17:20.009
And so those are the three responses, the kind of the, the.

00:17:20.009 --> 00:17:23.410
The point was, each one of them ended up running to Jesus.

00:17:24.152 --> 00:17:34.506
Uh, and each one of them ended up running to Jesus and Jesus reached them in unique ways, but Peter gets the award for best running to Jesus guy, even though, yeah, john beat him there.

00:17:34.452 --> 00:17:35.493
Yeah, john beat him there.

00:17:35.493 --> 00:17:36.415
That's really you know.

00:17:36.415 --> 00:17:40.151
But John only went because he saw Peter running and he had to outdo him.

00:17:40.151 --> 00:17:42.826
But the thing I thought was interesting, I relate to that.

00:17:43.146 --> 00:17:49.261
Yeah, peter got a, a special revelation on the way home.

00:17:49.261 --> 00:18:13.150
So because it says he he marveled and then went home and you don't find out until like verse 23 of luke 24 that he actually met with jesus and first corinthians 15 uh, I'm sorry, 51 verse 15 says that, or 51, 15 verse I think might be 15 actually is where it said Paul says that he got Jesus revealed himself first to Peter.

00:18:13.150 --> 00:18:20.709
So anyway, I thought that was fascinating that he got the initial invite and connection before all the rest of the disciples.

00:18:20.709 --> 00:18:27.826
Anything tell me about some of your sermon illustrations that really just crushed it or maybe didn't land either one.

00:18:29.280 --> 00:18:30.948
So come back to courageously honor Jesus.

00:18:30.948 --> 00:18:37.906
I talked about how, uh, I preached here at a youth service and I got told not to do the second service because it was so bad.

00:18:37.906 --> 00:18:44.352
And then I talked about how I lost my job, uh, at Fiat of Austin, which is a terrible job.

00:18:44.472 --> 00:18:45.094
Oh, that was funny.

00:18:48.599 --> 00:18:48.961
Good for uh.

00:18:48.961 --> 00:18:52.348
And so I felt like a failure and I felt afraid, yeah, uh, and confused, of like, okay, lord, you brought me here.

00:18:52.348 --> 00:18:52.990
What are you doing?

00:18:52.990 --> 00:18:55.683
Uh, I thought I was here to do ministry.

00:18:55.683 --> 00:18:57.106
Obviously that's not going well.

00:18:57.106 --> 00:18:58.590
What, what do you want me to do?

00:18:58.590 --> 00:18:58.651
Um?

00:18:58.651 --> 00:19:04.509
And so that was like the bookend story of like you can come back after failure.

00:19:04.509 --> 00:19:06.992
You can come back and overcome your fears.

00:19:06.992 --> 00:19:11.911
That's good Through recognizing that you're a restored representative.

00:19:11.911 --> 00:19:15.970
And what's cool is like similar to what you were just saying.

00:19:15.970 --> 00:19:28.170
Jesus, when he's through the angel, talking to the Marys that are there at the tomb, he says go and tell the disciples and Peter, right, right.

00:19:28.170 --> 00:19:34.853
And so he's sending them to remind Peter that, hey, even though you failed, even though you've yeah three times.

00:19:35.480 --> 00:19:38.007
I want you you're still part of this Come back.

00:19:38.708 --> 00:19:42.707
Yeah, oh, that's good, okay, so when did?

00:19:48.140 --> 00:19:48.661
when did you not get asked?

00:19:48.681 --> 00:19:50.826
back to uh, it was like preaching at youth back in the james meyer days.

00:19:50.826 --> 00:19:52.329
Oh yeah, oh early, early, early days, okay, yeah.

00:19:52.349 --> 00:19:54.082
Oh, there's like a middle school and a high school service.

00:19:54.082 --> 00:19:57.034
Maybe I did the first one, but it was, it was.

00:19:57.034 --> 00:19:58.780
It was a little bit rough yeah, that happens.

00:19:59.101 --> 00:20:00.664
Oh yeah, all right.

00:20:00.664 --> 00:20:06.336
Um, okay, holland, any great illustrations that, uh, all of the merging pastors are going to listen to?

00:20:06.336 --> 00:20:10.290
Because they're, like, I'm going to learn from Holland Gregg on what sermon illustration is going to land?

00:20:10.290 --> 00:20:11.260
I don't think so.

00:20:13.165 --> 00:20:17.643
If we had two services at my church, I might've not got asked back for the second service.

00:20:17.643 --> 00:20:18.626
I don't know.

00:20:18.626 --> 00:20:30.575
I just I felt like I mean, I don't know, sometimes you have great sermons and maybe I'm the I'm very critical of myself too, and so you know I just afterward I was just like was that good?

00:20:30.575 --> 00:20:31.505
Was that even a?

00:20:31.907 --> 00:20:32.874
what even happened?

00:20:33.055 --> 00:20:36.609
Yeah, I don't know, maybe, maybe, maybe it was fine, but it was just one.

00:20:36.609 --> 00:20:40.067
It just felt like things weren't, it wasn't landing.

00:20:40.127 --> 00:20:48.722
Nobody was crying, taking yeah, no, well, the kids were crying, the kids were still crying.

00:20:48.722 --> 00:20:52.672
So I don't know, I mean, I preached the scripture, I taught right doctrine I, I.

00:20:52.672 --> 00:20:55.365
I preached Christ crucified and risen.

00:20:55.365 --> 00:21:02.249
And so you know, I think I was faithful to my task as a preacher and I invited people to repent and receive Christ.

00:21:02.249 --> 00:21:06.248
But in terms of yeah, did I have these amazing illustrations?

00:21:06.248 --> 00:21:06.689
I don't think so.

00:21:07.039 --> 00:21:09.865
Did um can't can't win them all.

00:21:09.865 --> 00:21:12.772
Yeah, when I got off the stage, adrian goes.

00:21:12.772 --> 00:21:13.422
How do you feel it went?

00:21:13.422 --> 00:21:24.932
And you know you're like um, I was like, eh, it was a sermon, you know if Jenny ever asks me that question, I assume that it didn't go well.

00:21:24.972 --> 00:21:26.980
Yeah, it's like how do you think it went?

00:21:26.980 --> 00:21:28.023
It like oh so it was bad.

00:21:28.144 --> 00:21:42.184
That's what you're saying, yeah, and you're you want to know if I know it was bad, yeah, and so, and then I think I got some um charity texts from adrian's friends, which was nice, which I did appreciate, and they go.

00:21:42.184 --> 00:21:44.268
It was a totally new angle on the gospel.

00:21:44.268 --> 00:21:46.251
That was good yeah.

00:21:48.759 --> 00:21:48.961
New angle.

00:21:48.961 --> 00:21:49.643
I don't know if that's.

00:21:51.147 --> 00:21:51.769
I'm sure it was great.

00:21:51.769 --> 00:21:58.605
That's what you tell your kids whenever it's like a drawing, that you don't want to lie to them and you're like those are some great angles, what a creative.

00:21:58.605 --> 00:22:05.807
Yeah, so you know it was good.

00:22:05.807 --> 00:22:09.701
Yeah, so you know it was good.

00:22:09.701 --> 00:22:23.568
We, I had the probably the highlight for me Um, I had this young man, uh, named Tyler, the guy that came from Kyle and he had just gotten saved, uh, the two weeks before, by reading the Bible, Like he didn't go to church had.

00:22:23.690 --> 00:22:41.674
No, he just was miserable and alone, suicidal, and he just kind of did a last ditch prayer before he was going to end his life and he's like, hey, if you're out there, god, I just want to die without a conscience or, like you know, just make it end me so I don't have to go to non-existence.

00:22:41.674 --> 00:22:54.708
And he was into um, a new age, new ageism, like crystals and a lot of psychedelic drugs and um, kind of like esoteric readings and that kind of stuff anyway.

00:22:54.708 --> 00:22:57.512
So he, he, he.

00:22:57.512 --> 00:23:03.892
For eight years he was into that and just felt he got so numb to everything that he just wanted to end it.

00:23:03.892 --> 00:23:07.067
And so then all of a sudden, a voice pops up in his head.

00:23:07.067 --> 00:23:09.645
Uh, you know, at this point you know which voice, who knows?

00:23:09.645 --> 00:23:16.009
But no, but this one actually told him that life was worth living and somehow that instruction to get a Bible.

00:23:16.140 --> 00:23:21.886
He started reading a Bible and then God's word just hit him and then he started going to random churches.

00:23:21.886 --> 00:23:27.330
He, I think he went the week before he went to to a Presbyterian church and a I don't know.

00:23:27.330 --> 00:23:33.627
He just said he knew one was Presbyterian, he didn't know what the other one was and he said they were great, they were fine.

00:23:33.627 --> 00:23:39.386
And then he's like you know, maybe I should go look up in North Austin because I want to move there and maybe it's because of his work.

00:23:39.386 --> 00:23:49.634
I haven't really gotten the full story, but he Googled the churches in North Austin, showed up here, came to our sunrise service and his plan was to hit our sunrise service and another church, and another church.

00:23:49.634 --> 00:23:53.686
And then he just ended up staying here and Robert Sass got a hold of him, took him out door knocking last night.

00:23:53.948 --> 00:23:55.111
Wow, or Monday.

00:23:55.160 --> 00:23:56.585
Took him out door knocking Monday night.

00:23:56.625 --> 00:23:57.125
Oh, Robert.

00:23:57.227 --> 00:23:58.309
Yeah, robert's so great.

00:23:58.309 --> 00:24:08.353
So he went out and door knocked and shared Christ and then he came to my men's group and was super open about all sorts of stuff and now we're going to get him baptized.

00:24:08.353 --> 00:24:10.655
So it's like, hey man, that's amazing.

00:24:10.655 --> 00:24:15.189
I wish we could have said we were the ones that led him to Christ.

00:24:15.189 --> 00:24:17.140
But we definitely get to a water and God gets the increase and it's just, it's exciting.

00:24:17.140 --> 00:24:19.468
So, um, that was a highlight for me.

00:24:19.468 --> 00:24:27.374
Um, my one illustration I loved was and I don't know if this resonates with you guys you one illustration I loved was and I don't know if this resonates with you guys you guys remember ice cream trucks.

00:24:27.374 --> 00:24:27.913
Do they still have ice?

00:24:27.933 --> 00:24:28.193
cream trucks.

00:24:28.193 --> 00:24:30.596
Yes, they drive around in our neighborhood like eight o'clock, it's the worst.

00:24:30.596 --> 00:24:32.096
Really scare my kids.

00:24:32.096 --> 00:24:34.218
Yep, oh, that's eight o'clock.

00:24:34.337 --> 00:24:41.500
Yeah, it's the worst when I was a kid, they seemed really like magical and awesome it was like the greatest.

00:24:41.500 --> 00:24:47.573
Thing ever as an adult now, like I don't know if they've changed, but they just, they're all seem sketchy yeah, oh, absolutely.

00:24:47.593 --> 00:24:50.859
I mean white van with some dude driving hey, kids want some ice cream.

00:24:50.859 --> 00:24:53.311
You know like you're just thinking yourself that kid's getting abducted.

00:24:53.311 --> 00:24:55.280
So I talked about that reality.

00:24:55.320 --> 00:25:08.952
But the the ice cream, right, I mean yeah, ice cream sound all right, which maybe, as when you have childlike faith, it's an exciting sound that that causes you to go and run to the truck.

00:25:08.952 --> 00:25:13.070
But now you're just like nah, that guy's probably out.

00:25:13.070 --> 00:25:22.669
Just you know swindling kids and you know abducting them and take him to you know child trafficking somewhere, like that's kind of where people go now, and you're like I'll believe it when I see a genuine ice cream truck.

00:25:22.669 --> 00:25:23.925
So that's kind of the general direction.

00:25:23.925 --> 00:25:28.547
I don't know.

00:25:28.547 --> 00:25:29.730
Thumbs down on ice cream trucks.

00:25:29.730 --> 00:25:30.693
I haven't seen what.

00:25:30.693 --> 00:25:31.817
What's the analogy?

00:25:31.857 --> 00:25:39.866
the analogy is the gospel message is like the ice cream music the music that you hear, is you ever and like you hear it and so that knew you ran to it.

00:25:39.866 --> 00:25:44.904
Or if you've been disappointed, you're like whatever I'm never gonna find it because it was every time.

00:25:44.924 --> 00:25:48.092
That makes sense when I went, when I went looking for the ice cream trucks, I heard the music.

00:25:48.092 --> 00:25:50.268
I could hear the music but I could never find the truck.

00:25:50.268 --> 00:25:59.042
And then eventually I go back to my mom, I make my mom drive me all over the neighborhood and then we couldn't find it and I get so mad so the next time I heard it's like screw that, I'm not gonna listen to any more ice cream truck sounds.

00:25:59.042 --> 00:26:00.125
I'm gonna.

00:26:00.125 --> 00:26:00.565
I'm done.

00:26:00.565 --> 00:26:01.306
I'm done with you.

00:26:01.306 --> 00:26:03.189
I've been ice cream truck hurt.

00:26:03.249 --> 00:26:17.505
I have six bad ice cream truck hurt and you deconstructed your deconstructed my ice cream truck and now I understand the true, just negative impact the institution of ice cream trucks has had on our country.

00:26:17.505 --> 00:26:17.964
There you go.

00:26:17.964 --> 00:26:24.994
Wow, that's good, all right, so, all right.

00:26:24.994 --> 00:26:29.230
So, um, back to what went, uh, right.

00:26:29.230 --> 00:26:30.703
So let's talk about some things that went right.

00:26:30.703 --> 00:26:37.329
Uh, for you, james, what went right during the Sunday morning or Sunday, sorry, Sunday afternoon.

00:26:37.329 --> 00:26:39.005
What do you do Sunday morning?

00:26:39.005 --> 00:26:39.708
Do you just prep?

00:26:40.580 --> 00:26:41.846
That's like an extra free day.

00:26:41.846 --> 00:26:45.406
I am so prepared that I never have to study on Sunday morning.

00:26:46.249 --> 00:26:48.634
Very good, that's good, amazing that's how it should be.

00:26:48.759 --> 00:26:52.509
There's usually a good two to three hour chunk of getting ready on Sunday morning.

00:26:52.528 --> 00:26:52.930
That's good.

00:26:52.930 --> 00:26:53.952
What time do you get up on Sunday?

00:26:55.421 --> 00:26:59.267
Eight or so Depends on it's later than usual.

00:26:59.287 --> 00:26:59.907
Yeah, that's good.

00:26:59.907 --> 00:27:01.372
You should sleep on in yeah.

00:27:01.480 --> 00:27:02.722
Get a little extra rest and then get started.

00:27:02.722 --> 00:27:03.744
Nice, get a little extra rest and then get started.

00:27:03.765 --> 00:27:04.005
Nice.

00:27:04.005 --> 00:27:06.550
Do you do your sermon for your wife, or anything?

00:27:06.550 --> 00:27:10.064
No, yeah Me either, I share.

00:27:10.203 --> 00:27:16.339
I share, like an outline with a signal group which is like just a, it's like Slack, but it's a.

00:27:16.339 --> 00:27:20.009
I share an outline and ask them to pray over the text and share thoughts as they read it.

00:27:20.009 --> 00:27:21.332
Oh nice, that's cool.

00:27:21.352 --> 00:27:27.903
It's not a it not a, it's not a full run through like preaching practice.

00:27:27.903 --> 00:27:29.147
Yeah, yeah, I now do two preaching practices.

00:27:29.147 --> 00:27:29.910
I know that sounds insane.

00:27:29.910 --> 00:27:33.821
I do a preaching practice on tuesday which is really saying improv.

00:27:33.821 --> 00:27:38.416
Yeah, that's exactly what it is, but it's extemporaneous.

00:27:38.416 --> 00:27:40.643
But you know, it's really funny when you force yourself to do it.

00:27:40.643 --> 00:27:50.152
It's amazing all the the amount of speed you'll you'll make up on on at least going faster, to knowing that that idea is not going to work.

00:27:50.373 --> 00:27:53.981
Yeah, that's good Like failing faster is kind of what I call Tuesday and then Thursday.

00:27:53.981 --> 00:28:04.306
I do the typical run through same message both times, same message both times, and then, um Sunday, I did the 7am, 9am and then 1045.

00:28:04.306 --> 00:28:05.690
Wow, holland, what about for you?

00:28:09.727 --> 00:28:17.691
What went right Sunday, you know we gathered, we worshiped Jesus.

00:28:17.691 --> 00:28:22.685
Okay, those of us, yeah, that were there.

00:28:24.249 --> 00:28:25.311
You filled a baptismal.

00:28:31.359 --> 00:28:35.067
You filled a baptismal we filled it and emptied it, and it was there if anyone wanted to get baptized, which is great, we were ready.

00:28:35.067 --> 00:28:35.509
Yeah, that is exciting.

00:28:35.509 --> 00:28:42.972
Uh, yeah, we preached the word, we sang songs to jesus and we had, we fellowshiped with each other wife say after your sermon, did she go?

00:28:43.540 --> 00:28:52.191
how'd you feel, what did she say?

00:28:52.972 --> 00:28:55.895
She said did church go good?

00:28:55.895 --> 00:28:57.263
I think church go good.

00:28:57.263 --> 00:29:00.414
Is that what you said?

00:29:00.414 --> 00:29:00.957
Yeah, oh, yeah.

00:29:00.957 --> 00:29:04.724
Um, yeah, we had no nursery on Sunday either, so that makes it way better.

00:29:05.467 --> 00:29:08.732
Sure More hearers of the gospel, more hearers yeah.

00:29:09.334 --> 00:29:10.436
Well, yeah, works for the numbers.

00:29:10.436 --> 00:29:13.526
Yeah, um, it was great.

00:29:13.526 --> 00:29:14.208
What was the question?

00:29:16.681 --> 00:29:21.599
Did she say anything like like what is what's your wife's typical response to when you come off the stage?

00:29:21.599 --> 00:29:23.126
She said do you like sit next to your wife?

00:29:23.126 --> 00:29:29.012
Uh, in church and the Sundays that she's not serving?

00:29:29.012 --> 00:29:30.319
Does she say like good job, or does she?

00:29:31.201 --> 00:29:31.765
Very encouraging.

00:29:31.845 --> 00:29:32.287
That's good.

00:29:32.287 --> 00:29:34.365
What does your wife do?

00:29:34.365 --> 00:29:36.070
What does Katie do?

00:29:37.266 --> 00:29:39.035
Yeah, she gives some good feedback most of the time.

00:29:39.621 --> 00:29:43.391
No, but I mean like on Sunday morning, like what's her feedback?

00:29:43.391 --> 00:29:46.188
Like right after, like immediately after?

00:29:51.102 --> 00:29:53.506
I understand, like when you get home, but does she say anything like right when you sit down?

00:29:53.506 --> 00:29:56.971
It's usually just a little pat on the back or something, but not much talking there.

00:29:56.971 --> 00:30:00.055
Yeah, that's good Like a hug and a pat, okay, that's good.

00:30:01.039 --> 00:30:02.323
Yeah, you need something.

00:30:02.604 --> 00:30:14.907
though If it didn't go like, if something in the sermon, like if Jenny feels like we off about it or something like that, she will, I'll sit down or I'll come next to her and she'll usually she'll just like pray for me, and so.

00:30:14.907 --> 00:30:27.549
So if she starts praying for me and I'm like okay, something that's where you like, you're like well, that's where you wish you had two services.

00:30:27.549 --> 00:30:32.864
You're like okay, maybe I can correct something for the second service, but uh, wait, wait.

00:30:32.884 --> 00:30:35.609
I would love to know like how that position?

00:30:35.609 --> 00:30:45.493
You know she's praying for her, she's just holding you, god, I just pray that you would do your will.

00:30:45.493 --> 00:30:53.343
Your word does not return void.

00:30:53.363 --> 00:30:54.785
You promised that was a great text.

00:30:54.785 --> 00:30:56.367
Lord help my husband.

00:30:56.407 --> 00:31:05.403
Yeah, andrian says something relatively encouraging, which is really good, uh, but usually I think sometimes she's worried that I don't think it's encouraging, and then she goes how do you think it went?

00:31:05.403 --> 00:31:07.086
Yeah, and that's where I want to go.

00:31:07.086 --> 00:31:11.061
Yeah, we'll talk about it later, cause I don't want to ask how do you think it went?

00:31:11.082 --> 00:31:13.874
Yeah, how did church go is like okay, obviously.

00:31:13.874 --> 00:31:20.787
Yeah, you didn't think it went well, and so yeah, all right.

00:31:20.866 --> 00:31:32.982
Yeah, I mean that's, that's, yeah, I mean that's kind of some cues, like if you're a person that's in the audience like I don't want to say lie to your pastor about how well they're preaching.

00:31:32.982 --> 00:31:36.531
But man, find the good angle, that's a good one.

00:31:36.531 --> 00:31:39.858
Good angle is a good direction to go with.

00:31:40.520 --> 00:31:47.630
Or, you know, find something positive to kind of yeah, I will say like overall, Jenny, encouraging and we'll find.

00:31:47.630 --> 00:31:51.768
We'll find things to praise or share what God has taught her.

00:31:51.768 --> 00:32:00.487
And I think, just like I don't know if you're listening for pastors, wives listening, yeah, that encouragement is very valuable.

00:32:00.487 --> 00:32:03.099
Very valuable Goes a long way to know Cause.

00:32:03.099 --> 00:32:16.405
Honestly, like if five, 10, 15 people from church came up to me and were like that sermon was trash, I would be like okay, Um, but if my wife is like that sermon was trash, that would like be a dagger in my heart.

00:32:16.566 --> 00:32:17.247
Maybe I should retire.

00:32:17.468 --> 00:32:21.564
Yeah, but uh, and so that encouragement is really valuable.

00:32:21.564 --> 00:32:29.415
And then also, like I would say, the times when you have like okay, you said this and I don't know if it came across the way that you meant it to like, that's really valuable.

00:32:29.415 --> 00:32:34.278
Obviously, she knows me better than anyone and I think it's probably helped me grow more than anyone else.

00:32:34.378 --> 00:32:36.026
Yeah, she's done a good job of that with me.

00:32:36.026 --> 00:32:39.509
It's like I know that you probably meant this to come off like this.

00:32:39.509 --> 00:32:47.851
Here's how it actually came out it actually came off, and I'm always like, at first I was like no, you know, and then eventually you go back and listen to it.

00:32:47.851 --> 00:32:48.672
Yeah, yeah.

00:32:48.672 --> 00:32:54.209
So yeah, okay, that comes with some some years of experience there.

00:32:54.209 --> 00:33:02.094
Has Katie ever come back to you, james, and said like, okay, don't ever do that again, not yet, no, thank God, that's good.

00:33:11.720 --> 00:33:12.542
I think that's happened a couple times.

00:33:12.542 --> 00:33:12.903
I don't you know.

00:33:12.903 --> 00:33:13.626
Like, don't, please, don't do that.

00:33:13.626 --> 00:33:30.226
Although I think her dad, um, uh, adrian had brought, bought coffee for the entire staff because everyone had worked so hard with a good friday service, uh, the saturday extravaganza, and then so she brought everyone, uh, coffee, and I've been off caffeine now for about three weeks and um and not and it's not like a caffeine's evil or anything, I just I don't know, I think it started by.

00:33:30.226 --> 00:33:30.830
I just didn't drink it.

00:33:30.830 --> 00:33:33.903
Now I'm like, hey, I'm gonna try drinking water, uh, anyway, so, uh.

00:33:33.903 --> 00:33:57.288
So she had some caffeine, yeah, cheers, uh, and so, uh, she had like a white chocolate mocha for me, which I would have loved that, but she didn't give it to me because her dad was like, don't give it to him because apparently I talk, I talk fast, naturally, right, but me on like caffeine, where I haven't been like like a what's it called.

00:33:57.529 --> 00:34:07.800
We know these things about you, chris apparently I talk a lot faster and way more animated and like, do cartwheels and stuff on the stage?

00:34:07.800 --> 00:34:12.831
And I think he was like do not give that to him, he does not need that.

00:34:12.831 --> 00:34:17.706
So I did not do any cartwheels on the stage, which I'm sure a lot of people are disappointed.

00:34:17.706 --> 00:34:29.764
Yeah, yeah, um, we did baptize three people, which is exciting, uh, uh, hector, uh, and then vanessa, who robert sass led to faith on a door knocking nice, uh, one of the apartments nearby.

00:34:29.764 --> 00:34:31.630
And then kingsley, one of our kids.

00:34:31.630 --> 00:34:36.884
So that was, that was a cool experience, amazing, um, okay, uh.

00:34:36.884 --> 00:34:39.969
Other illustrations I thought you had one illustration.

00:34:39.969 --> 00:34:41.072
You were going to tell us the illustration.

00:34:41.744 --> 00:34:44.634
No, I said that I didn't really think they landed well.

00:34:44.634 --> 00:34:45.056
No, no.

00:34:45.626 --> 00:34:51.313
Well, I want to hear the illustration that didn't land and we can give you like, oh, that was awesome, it really James, what was another one of yours?

00:34:54.846 --> 00:34:56.090
I can't think of one right now.

00:34:57.414 --> 00:34:57.735
Yeah.

00:34:58.688 --> 00:34:59.494
I don't like just.

00:34:59.494 --> 00:35:01.103
Oh, these were just the best ones for me.

00:35:01.824 --> 00:35:03.277
Yeah, uh, I don't like just, oh, these were just the best ones for me.

00:35:03.277 --> 00:35:06.210
Yeah, usually my easter sermons I feel like I kill them and I didn't feel like they're.

00:35:06.210 --> 00:35:08.315
They were good, I went the.

00:35:08.315 --> 00:35:11.289
So I don't say they were not awesome, because I use people's stories.

00:35:11.289 --> 00:35:14.036
Um, our one guy, have you guys met?

00:35:14.036 --> 00:35:14.597
Machine gun nick?

00:35:14.597 --> 00:35:15.487
I think you guys.

00:35:15.487 --> 00:35:20.487
Yeah, yeah, so machine gun nick is kind of like he's like the, the church mascot at this point.

00:35:20.487 --> 00:35:26.951
Uh, and all stories revolve around machine gun nick and and he had had a run-in.

00:35:26.951 --> 00:35:35.269
Well, he took in a, a homeless guy and then homeless guy had drugs that made machine gun nick mad.

00:35:35.269 --> 00:35:39.465
Machine gun nick, when he gets mad, pulls out guns you know that happens.

00:35:39.947 --> 00:35:50.650
And so he's at the church, guns pulled out and you know he wasn't waving it around and he didn't point at him, but he did have it out and then cody's like put the gun away and then the guy has his posse there.

00:35:50.650 --> 00:35:51.313
You know it was like.

00:35:51.753 --> 00:36:01.894
It was like a showdown standoff yeah, it was a big church standoff and so that was a little nerve-wracking and machine gun nick did a good job of repenting and apologizing for his uh.

00:36:01.894 --> 00:36:08.856
So we talked about how that was similar to how, even though Peter denied Jesus, he ran to Jesus.

00:36:08.856 --> 00:36:09.346
He wasn't.

00:36:09.346 --> 00:36:14.510
As soon as there was an opportunity for him to repent, he took it because there was, there was.

00:36:14.510 --> 00:36:15.233
Jesus was alive.

00:36:15.233 --> 00:36:18.155
He's running to him, which was awesome.

00:36:18.155 --> 00:36:22.293
And then the other guy is Maddie, is a.

00:36:22.293 --> 00:36:23.675
You know Maddie?

00:36:23.735 --> 00:36:24.577
you guys both know, maddie.

00:36:24.898 --> 00:36:28.695
Yeah, you were sharing the gospel with Maddie for just a million times, a million times.

00:36:28.695 --> 00:36:30.248
And so Maddie is.

00:36:30.248 --> 00:36:35.798
He now does our setup and runs a camera on Sunday.

00:36:35.798 --> 00:36:40.135
He is the most faithful, one of the most faithful non-members of our church.

00:36:40.135 --> 00:36:41.807
That's awesome, and he is.

00:36:41.807 --> 00:36:46.451
He never misses of setting up at like 7, 30 or whatever time he sets up.

00:36:46.451 --> 00:36:47.833
All the that's huge.

00:36:47.894 --> 00:36:51.411
You know the parking lot stuff he loves the community, he loves, he loves the community.

00:36:51.411 --> 00:37:01.293
And I, because I asked, I was like after going to lunch with him, kind of what I do now when I want to train people how to share the gospel, we go to lunch with maddie and all right, here's your lost person and now share the gospel.

00:37:01.293 --> 00:37:02.153
And they share the gospel.

00:37:02.153 --> 00:37:10.956
And then he asked a million questions about the Gilgamesh uh Epic and how all the other, uh, the census yeah.

00:37:11.135 --> 00:37:14.952
Yeah, yep, so it's so great he goes to all of those and they go.

00:37:14.952 --> 00:37:16.992
You know I'm not going to argue into the gospel.

00:37:16.992 --> 00:37:18.751
Jesus has to reveal himself to you.

00:37:18.751 --> 00:37:19.226
It's great.

00:37:19.226 --> 00:37:25.943
And then he goes, okay, and then he shows up again to serve again and he is happy about it and I love Maddie for that.

00:37:25.943 --> 00:37:28.269
In fact, I need to have Maddie on the podcast cause he's just great.

00:37:29.052 --> 00:37:32.246
Um, but one of the most faithful guys honestly, like has not.

00:37:32.246 --> 00:37:39.115
If he misses it's, he's tells you in writing, uh, by email, that he will not make it and uh, never just doesn't show up.

00:37:39.115 --> 00:37:40.277
So we're pretty grateful for that.

00:37:40.277 --> 00:37:42.960
It's pretty, pretty awesome having.

00:37:42.960 --> 00:37:57.336
Anyway, I told him the thing that was cool about doubting Thomas is he goes there's eight days where he was hanging out with the disciples and after they said we have seen the Lord, he tells them I, I won't believe unless I see it.

00:37:57.336 --> 00:37:58.929
And they don't kick him out.

00:37:59.371 --> 00:38:07.530
Yeah, and I just sort of made the point like that had to have been weird for thomas.

00:38:07.530 --> 00:38:36.697
Like you're seeing these people probably every day, you're going through life with them and they're believing and you're not, and you're like the doubting thomas of the group and and I think I was like, is it possible that and I'm trying to get into maddie's head a little bit with that it's like you're it to be true but you don't want to risk it for yourself and you love the excitement of these other people who believe in this thing and you love the fact of being around people who really believe something, and I think that's why churches are really attractive to lost people.

00:38:36.697 --> 00:38:50.208
There's about 20 or 30 non-Christians at our church on any given Sunday, so that's about over 10% of our of our people, yeah, are not saved on a sunday and it's exciting kind of be able to preach the gospel with urgency.

00:38:50.208 --> 00:38:54.717
Um, and I wonder if that's true of every church.

00:38:54.717 --> 00:38:59.235
I don't know, but, um, it's fun to know who the the people who don't believe in jesus are.

00:38:59.396 --> 00:39:03.596
And they're still there anyway yeah, for them to know it, and for them to know it, and for them to know it which I think a lot of time.

00:39:03.985 --> 00:39:10.534
I spend some time trying to deconvert people not deconstruct, but deconvert Cause like to say, like you really don't believe this, do you?

00:39:10.534 --> 00:39:26.847
You kind of like, let's just not steal the label, cause that now that we want to hold you to something that you really aren't why not just be a non-Christian?

00:39:26.867 --> 00:39:27.811
Yeah, have you ever experienced that with people?

00:39:27.811 --> 00:39:36.335
There's a man that we're ministering to and caring for that has come to church the past three Sundays, that he really wants his marriage to be better and that's why he's there.

00:39:36.335 --> 00:39:42.996
And at first, when I talked to him, he said I want to believe, but I just can't.

00:39:42.996 --> 00:39:48.757
And then when he came up for prayer this past Sunday, he said I want help being a better Christian.

00:39:48.757 --> 00:39:52.193
And so did something happen in between these two?

00:39:52.193 --> 00:39:52.596
Right?

00:39:53.568 --> 00:39:53.849
How do?

00:39:53.889 --> 00:39:56.170
we talk about this and let's get on the same page.

00:39:56.927 --> 00:39:58.132
How do you navigate that conversation?

00:39:59.271 --> 00:40:00.764
Well, I need to navigate that conversation.

00:40:00.764 --> 00:40:08.577
Just getting together with him, yeah, when it's not sunday afternoon, crazy, busy oh, was that this sunday where he said I want to?

00:40:08.597 --> 00:40:11.329
oh, that's exciting yeah, absolutely exciting.

00:40:11.349 --> 00:40:19.373
Um, so the way that the conversation goes is hey, you said a few weeks ago, when we talked to him, you were asking for prayer.

00:40:19.373 --> 00:40:21.967
This is what you said I want to believe, but I can't.

00:40:21.967 --> 00:40:27.974
And then this past sund, you said you want help being a better Christian and you want prayer for your marriage to be better.

00:40:27.974 --> 00:40:31.393
That part's staying consistent, but did something else happen in between?

00:40:31.614 --> 00:40:31.815
Yeah.

00:40:32.005 --> 00:40:33.050
What does it mean to be a Christian?

00:40:33.050 --> 00:40:36.952
Have you trusted Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins?

00:40:36.952 --> 00:40:37.974
What does that look like?

00:40:38.235 --> 00:40:38.856
Oh, that's so good.

00:40:38.856 --> 00:40:44.447
Look like oh, that's so good.

00:40:44.447 --> 00:40:45.489
So walking with him through that, that is awesome.

00:40:45.489 --> 00:40:46.092
Um, I feel like that's our our.

00:40:46.112 --> 00:40:54.034
My part two, or point two of my sermon was Cleopas walked away, and the reason why I walked away is he thought Jesus was going to redeem Israel.

00:40:54.034 --> 00:40:56.746
And so he's like I thought my life was going to get better.

00:40:56.746 --> 00:41:09.367
I might have a cabinet position, something would be better, I would no longer get bad taxes.

00:41:09.367 --> 00:41:09.728
And now here I am.

00:41:09.728 --> 00:41:11.255
It's not that great, um, and so I I think a lot of people are like that.

00:41:11.255 --> 00:41:14.867
They like the Christian vibe, they like the Christian people, but it doesn't impact their life until Jesus comes and actually meets with him.

00:41:14.867 --> 00:41:18.907
And that's when they believe, and then their hearts burn when the scriptures are open to them.

00:41:18.907 --> 00:41:21.452
Um, what?

00:41:21.452 --> 00:41:23.195
What do you think Holland for?

00:41:23.195 --> 00:41:27.958
Uh, you've dealt with a lot of people who don't believe and then you walk them through.

00:41:27.958 --> 00:41:31.692
If you're a walk through someone like hey, don't stop calling yourself a Christian.

00:41:31.692 --> 00:41:36.492
And then I want to say unconvert them or whatever, but, um, just help them to understand the reality.

00:41:36.492 --> 00:41:37.885
They were never saved in the first place.

00:41:38.085 --> 00:42:00.059
Yeah, yeah exactly, Um, a lot of did that a lot in young adult ministry here, and I think I've done that, continue to do that in ministry through church planting, and a lot of it is young adults, especially in my experience, who, yeah, maybe were raised in a Christian home or at least nominally Christian home.

00:42:00.139 --> 00:42:08.646
Of you know, we, we go to church, even if it's once or twice a year or something like that, but it's more of a cultural Christian type thing, Right.

00:42:08.646 --> 00:42:16.478
And then you know they do something that they feel is okay but isn't, and when you address that, I think it starts to unravel and gets exposed.

00:42:16.478 --> 00:42:37.567
And so for a lot of young adults it's moving in together, you know, while they're dating or something like that, and then we, you know, start having that conversation and deeper things get uncovered about, um, yeah, about where their heart is, what their understanding of scripture is and really their willingness to submit or their unwillingness to submit to scripture and going, okay, what does that reveal?

00:42:37.567 --> 00:42:44.005
Um, if this is God's word and uh, you know, here's the standard of um.

00:42:44.005 --> 00:42:49.967
If this is God's word and uh, you know, here's the standard of uh that God has called us to in this way, you know, flee sexual immorality, Right, and, uh, your unwillingness to do that.

00:42:49.967 --> 00:42:55.248
Okay, that's, that's revealing, that's exposing something, and so that's how a lot of the conversations have gone for me, yeah.

00:42:56.050 --> 00:43:04.436
And how do you um, especially when people are living in sin but saying they have a relationship with Jesus?

00:43:04.436 --> 00:43:08.735
I feel like that's the challenging part to confront.

00:43:08.735 --> 00:43:14.275
How does one lovingly confront a person at that spot?

00:43:14.275 --> 00:43:16.059
James, what do you think?

00:43:16.440 --> 00:43:17.722
Yeah, it's good.

00:43:17.722 --> 00:43:24.878
It's most challenging if they don't have, if their conscience is seared, yeah, like they don't have.

00:43:24.878 --> 00:43:35.373
If their conscience is seared, yeah, like they don't have conviction, they don't have a desire to repent and turn away from that Right, that's when you might really start to question if they've believed in the first place.

00:43:35.414 --> 00:43:35.996
Right, right right.

00:43:36.826 --> 00:43:41.476
Because you don't want to lay on the grace and say, okay, hey, there's grace for you.

00:43:41.476 --> 00:43:42.751
It's not about your performance.

00:43:42.751 --> 00:43:44.793
So, just keep on doing what you're doing.

00:43:46.588 --> 00:43:59.855
And then you want and I think it's, I almost feel like it's, is it 1 Timothy 3 or 2 Timothy 3 where, like you, have a knowledge of God but you don't understand it's power, Like there's no power, and I feel like that's where a lot of people sort of struggle.

00:43:59.855 --> 00:44:03.233
Holl, I have the confrontation part for you.

00:44:03.233 --> 00:44:06.355
You've had to do that many, many times at least in the ministry here.

00:44:06.355 --> 00:44:11.072
Like what's your, I don't know, is there like a do you have to pump yourself up?

00:44:11.072 --> 00:44:11.838
Like I can do this?

00:44:11.838 --> 00:44:12.985
Or you know what I mean.

00:44:12.985 --> 00:44:20.835
Like I mean, how do you get, like, how do you get prepared for those kinds of conversations are just that challenging.

00:44:25.585 --> 00:44:30.635
Yeah, I, I pray and I trust the Lord with how it goes and I think I have realistic expectations that people are going to.

00:44:30.635 --> 00:44:38.489
Uh, there's going to be some who get angry and walk away and there's going to be some who feel the conviction of the Holy spirit and convert to Christ through it.

00:44:38.489 --> 00:44:44.387
And I've seen both of those and, um, it's I'm not going to say like I don't care at all.

00:44:44.387 --> 00:44:49.327
Uh like, if someone walks away, it's not like I don't care at all, I care about that person.

00:44:49.327 --> 00:44:56.510
But when you understand, there's a very real possibility they're going to hear this, get mad at you, call you legalistic, call you judgmental, you know.

00:44:56.510 --> 00:44:59.094
And then they're going to walk away and possibly slander you.

00:44:59.094 --> 00:45:02.219
And when you just kind of understand that, going in, you're not shocked when it happens.

00:45:02.239 --> 00:45:05.579
It's not that you don't care, it's just you're like yep, I knew that could happen.

00:45:06.507 --> 00:45:17.411
Yeah, and that's a healthy place where you're not responsible for the result, but your part is having the conversation, confronting them in love, and then what God does there.

00:45:17.905 --> 00:45:26.641
Yeah, faithfulness belongs to us, results belong to God, and so, uh, yeah, there's been some good ones, though, where we've had conversations like that, and people have been even some.

00:45:26.641 --> 00:45:27.264
Later.

00:45:27.264 --> 00:45:41.112
Man, I got a text message this is like a few months ago, um, at this point, but it was from someone that, um, I had confronted about that exact issue, like two years ago or something, maybe, and they got upset, Um, they left the church.

00:45:41.112 --> 00:45:43.637
That didn't say a word to me, you know.

00:45:43.637 --> 00:45:51.606
After that, and I just, you know it was a real like I cared about these people, you know, and I knew that was a possibility you have.

00:45:51.646 --> 00:45:52.349
You count the cost.

00:45:52.349 --> 00:45:55.326
You say, ok, it's worth addressing this, even if they leave.

00:45:55.326 --> 00:45:59.331
It's better to address this, to shepherd their heart, you know.

00:45:59.331 --> 00:46:12.132
And so, anyway, they, they, the couple, did leave, um, but two years later, um, the girl sent me a text message and said hey, I just want to let you know I'm sorry for the way that I responded to that.

00:46:12.132 --> 00:46:14.199
You were right, I was wrong.

00:46:14.199 --> 00:46:16.326
Thank you for loving me enough to tell me the truth.

00:46:16.326 --> 00:46:20.233
And I live in, you know, in this city now and I'm going to this church now.

00:46:20.353 --> 00:46:21.394
And I just wanted to say thank you.

00:46:21.536 --> 00:46:23.739
And I was like man that message.

00:46:24.045 --> 00:46:25.070
That means the world after.

00:46:25.264 --> 00:46:34.873
It's just so encouraging to know, like, yeah, it may be two years later that, um, you know that, that, that a decision is finally made to go.

00:46:34.873 --> 00:46:39.047
Okay, I need to repent, and but man, that's that's so worth it.

00:46:39.047 --> 00:46:46.980
It was worth having that conversation and then leaving our church for her to one day experience the conviction of the Holy spirit and turn.

00:46:46.980 --> 00:46:48.108
You know, you know what I mean.

00:46:48.108 --> 00:46:49.893
So that was beautiful.

00:46:50.164 --> 00:46:58.056
All right, let's wrap this up with, uh, something you're excited about and something that's challenging for you, that you're looking to navigate, uh, at Taylor Bible church.

00:47:00.326 --> 00:47:00.827
So we had a.

00:47:00.827 --> 00:47:10.150
We had a lot of folks that came for the first time this past Sunday, excited about seeing how those relationships progress, those, those folks come back.

00:47:10.150 --> 00:47:24.170
Something challenging we're doing a memorial service for a family and their daughter, adult daughter but still their daughter, 37 years old who passed away?

00:47:24.612 --> 00:47:28.032
Oh no, man so praying through that?

00:47:28.032 --> 00:47:29.951
Where is the daughter living?

00:47:29.951 --> 00:47:30.934
Was she in the area?

00:47:31.385 --> 00:47:33.152
She's in your neck of the woods.

00:47:33.152 --> 00:47:35.510
Actually she's in Schofield, oh wow.

00:47:35.550 --> 00:47:36.974
Yeah, oh man.

00:47:36.974 --> 00:47:39.929
Was yeah, yeah that's hard, golly, that's tough.

00:47:39.929 --> 00:47:41.567
Oh man, we'll be praying for that.

00:47:41.567 --> 00:47:43.030
That's huge.

00:47:43.030 --> 00:47:45.594
Okay, well, man, thanks for sharing that.

00:47:45.594 --> 00:47:46.215
That's rough.

00:47:46.215 --> 00:47:48.099
What about you, han?

00:47:48.099 --> 00:47:56.175
Something that you're excited about and then something you are challenged by there at Eastside Community Church?

00:47:58.186 --> 00:48:24.809
I'm excited I shared about the outreach earlier and that the apartments wanted to do more events with us and I think this is a big open door for us to be able to get a wider kind of reach in the community in terms of our outreach stuff, be able to do more events like that, our outreach stuff be able to do more events like that.

00:48:24.809 --> 00:48:31.750
So excited about the possibility of doing a summer kickoff outreach event or something like that there and just continuing to build relationships on the east side.

00:48:31.750 --> 00:48:32.373
That's good.

00:48:32.373 --> 00:48:35.530
Yeah, really looking forward to that.

00:48:35.530 --> 00:48:36.572
We have many struggles.

00:48:40.385 --> 00:48:44.896
How about one that our audience, which you know, reaches globally?

00:48:45.887 --> 00:48:58.702
we'll be able to be praying for you about Amazing Global listeners if you could pray, for I think the biggest need, the biggest need that our church has right now is in the area of leadership.

00:48:58.702 --> 00:49:15.012
Okay, that we I'm praying for some godly men to step up as elders who are committed not just to a year or a couple of years to be in the church and serve until they move on somewhere, but who have like a lifelong vision to serve the East side.

00:49:15.012 --> 00:49:16.074
And who?

00:49:16.074 --> 00:49:22.590
Who would you know that God would raise up some godly men to serve as elders for the long haul?

00:49:22.590 --> 00:49:31.505
And, ultimately, we'd love to be permanently established on the east side and be able to have a space of our own Right.

00:49:31.505 --> 00:49:45.367
And, yeah, praying that the Lord would provide that for us, that we could just so, 50 years, 100, 150 years from now, our church is still thriving, shining the light of Jesus, blessing the people of East Austin and honoring God.

00:49:45.367 --> 00:49:48.554
So that would be the big prayer request, okay love it.

00:49:49.144 --> 00:49:51.195
