A Conversation on Faith and Friendship

A Conversation on Faith and Friendship

Send us a text here!

329: Pastor Holland Grieg from Eastside Community Church joins Pastor Plek for an engaging conversation about mentorship and relationships within the faith community. How should someone like Kalor, who has embraced celibacy after leaving a homosexual lifestyle, navigate the complex world of male and female mentorship? They also discuss setting boundaries in relationships, particularly when faith intersects with cultural dynamics, and consider how one can be a positive influence without compromising personal beliefs or marital honor.

Jordan Smith Doing great Chris.

00:00:36.954 --> 00:00:37.615
How are you doing?

00:00:37.615 --> 00:00:40.341
It's good, a little pep in the step Never hurt anybody.

00:00:40.341 --> 00:00:41.823
Listen, I got a question in.

00:00:41.823 --> 00:00:44.749
I love for you guys to take this one and really help me.

00:00:44.749 --> 00:01:07.894
As we all know, kaler and Kaler, I think, is coming to a men's group tonight, which I'm excited about Kaler's talked about his transition from being a homosexual that was engaged to be married to being celibate, following Jesus heading for ministry and because he's been convicted by his lifestyle and by God's word and by the community that his sin is to be repented from and he has.

00:01:07.894 --> 00:01:24.087
And so when we talked about some of the struggles he's had as a Christian and one of our great listeners like we have some incredible listeners out there and I want us to thank this particular one who sent this question After listening to the podcast with Kallor.

00:01:24.106 --> 00:01:26.081
Kaylor talks about finding male mentors.

00:01:26.081 --> 00:01:31.460
However, if someone is attracted to males and trying not to be would be wise to seek out males.

00:01:31.460 --> 00:01:39.198
I figure things are often separated into male and female, assuming that most folks are heterosexual, trying to eliminate the messiness of, and complication of, sexual attraction.

00:01:39.198 --> 00:01:45.953
Thinking about these dynamics as a married female who has a husband who is far from God, who has invited a male to come to church.

00:01:45.953 --> 00:02:04.486
Okay, so this female has invited a male to come to church and she's wondering if Kaler should not be investing in dudes but be investing in ladies, so there isn't this unnecessary sexual attraction with a man.

00:02:04.507 --> 00:02:08.793
So there isn't this unnecessary sexual attraction with a man.

00:02:08.793 --> 00:02:11.276
What's the difference in her wanting to?

00:02:11.296 --> 00:02:12.337
bring a guy.

00:02:12.337 --> 00:02:27.806
I guess the question she's having is Well, I'm attracted to women, and if I were to go and say hey, I want to invite you to church, then you can come with me and my family, I guess I would say but I mean she's not bringing her husband doesn't go to church, right.

00:02:28.736 --> 00:02:30.383
And I think that's where the complication goes.

00:02:30.383 --> 00:02:34.342
I think there's there's there's several layers here, so let's first jump on layer one.

00:02:34.342 --> 00:02:44.906
Should Kaler and we'll have to talk to Kaler about this tonight but should Kaler be be seeking out female mentors as opposed to male mentors?

00:02:44.906 --> 00:03:00.140
As a Christian who has struggled with homosexuality in the past but moving forward, is wanting to be a celibate man of God and ultimately hopes that God changes his heart to be attracted to women, she's wondering is it wise for him?

00:03:00.140 --> 00:03:03.701
The better solution for him is to have female mentors and that kind of thing?

00:03:03.701 --> 00:03:04.866
Your thoughts on that, holland?

00:03:05.127 --> 00:03:06.312
Good question, and that kind of thing.

00:03:06.312 --> 00:03:07.204
Your thoughts on that, holland?

00:03:07.204 --> 00:03:12.594
Good question.

00:03:15.475 --> 00:03:18.288
So I think there's like a lot that goes into this, that I think needs to be talked about before we even get to it.

00:03:18.288 --> 00:03:18.568
We can do it.

00:03:18.568 --> 00:03:19.854
We can do it back Like like cause, like for me.

00:03:21.658 --> 00:03:35.347
I think the categories of heterosexual and homosexual are actually not biblical categories, right, um, in terms of who you are as a person, right, the Bible talks about men who practice homosexuality, not homosexuals.

00:03:35.347 --> 00:03:49.997
Right, the way that that category of someone being homosexual or being heterosexual is a modern, secular, psychological way of speaking, like Sigmund Freud, his contemporaries within the last hundred years.

00:03:49.997 --> 00:03:59.223
And so, uh, the Bible would not say that someone is a homosexual in terms of like they, they have an, uh, the idea of a homosexual orientation.

00:03:59.223 --> 00:04:02.597
That's all like modern pop psychology stuff.

00:04:02.918 --> 00:04:04.038
Gender was made.

00:04:04.038 --> 00:04:05.501
The word gender was made up in the fifties.

00:04:05.820 --> 00:04:07.883
Yeah, and um.

00:04:07.883 --> 00:04:17.887
So the gender identity and orientation, all that, none of this stuff is biblical categories, Right, and so we shouldn't see ourselves as homosexual or heterosexual.

00:04:17.887 --> 00:04:26.848
We should see ourselves simply as what the Bible says male or female, Right, and male being made for female and female being made for male.

00:04:26.848 --> 00:04:28.341
Those are the biblical categories.

00:04:28.341 --> 00:04:36.401
So for someone who's like, okay, well, I've struggled with same-sex attraction, Um, you're not a homosexual, you are a, you know.

00:04:36.401 --> 00:04:46.048
So, for Kayla, you are a male who has, um, some uh, disordered desires, Uh, and by the grace of God, he can change our hearts and our desires.

00:04:46.048 --> 00:04:49.396
But, um, what you?

00:04:49.396 --> 00:04:53.766
You don't need to say like, oh, I'm a different category of person that needs a different type of this or that.

00:04:53.766 --> 00:04:55.559
I think so.

00:04:55.718 --> 00:04:58.987
I think that's important is to say I'm a male, I've struggled with these desires.

00:04:58.987 --> 00:05:04.978
Every male struggles with disordered desires in some way or another, some that are just sinful, some that are unnatural, whatever it may be.

00:05:04.978 --> 00:05:14.504
Um, and so the idea of saying, okay, you know, should he seek a female mentor because he's had this, I don't think so.

00:05:14.504 --> 00:05:35.774
I think he should seek instead, seek to cultivate right desires and healthy male relationships within a church community where he has brotherhood, he has spiritual fatherhood and one day spiritual you know we'll have spiritual sons, that he's discipling and mentoring, but he needs to form healthy male friendships and relationships.

00:05:36.120 --> 00:05:36.834
I agree with you on this.

00:05:36.834 --> 00:05:50.298
Healthy male friendships, I think, is actually the answer to a lot of this, because if you've had unhealthy male relationships, it might be furthering your fear of them and the greater attraction to them.

00:05:50.298 --> 00:05:56.978
And let's just go from a um, I'm going to use uh, I feel like I'm Paul, using your language.

00:05:56.978 --> 00:06:15.062
You know a heterosexual person with a, like a man with an older woman who's like a grandma there's I don't, for the most part, there isn't a sexual attraction there Like that's someone that's like hey, let me, I've got wisdom for you in this area or whatever, and you would never think there was a weird sexual thing.

00:06:15.062 --> 00:06:27.750
Like we work with lots of women, uh, and the church, and I'm not sitting there going like I wonder if she's into me, right, like I think that's yeah, that's good, Right Like so you wouldn't or or like um as a pastor.

00:06:28.071 --> 00:06:34.161
Uh, I'm talking to women all the time, and probably the, and it's weird now to be almost 50.

00:06:34.161 --> 00:06:34.925
It's wild.

00:06:34.925 --> 00:06:40.083
And they're like 20 something year olds 20 something year olds that look at me like I'm their dad.

00:06:40.184 --> 00:06:40.283
And.

00:06:40.363 --> 00:06:56.084
I've you know, as I'm entering into this new phase of life, like we just did a baptism video for a 22 year old and like I would have been 25 when she was born which is weird crazy anyway.

00:06:56.543 --> 00:07:09.836
So like because in your head you're like yeah, we're the same age, we're all just young people and she's looking at me like I might as well have a cane and about to die right like, and so I don't think that she has any like worry, unless I.

00:07:09.836 --> 00:07:26.016
You know I'm sure that there are other relationships like that that we've seen out in the world it's possible it's, but, but for the most part she's looking at me more like a dad figure and, um, I'm like communicating with her on that level and so I don't think there's any weirdness about that.

00:07:26.076 --> 00:07:34.528
So at the same time, so, wither, I would say like he needs a man and, to be fair, like I guess I'm 25.

00:07:34.528 --> 00:07:49.750
He's like I'm like 22 years older than him and so I think at some point he needs a man like me or an older guy that could speak into his life and challenge him on the things where he's not looking at me as like maybe I'll be getting a relationship with him, but rather someone to challenge me.

00:07:49.771 --> 00:07:52.151
Well, that's the thing she said mentor, define mentor.

00:07:52.151 --> 00:08:00.644
Yeah, so it's somebody that you're you're using to gain knowledge and gain you know, walking through discipleship, accountable all those things.

00:08:00.644 --> 00:08:04.805
So you're, you're, you're walking with life through that person and you're getting advice.

00:08:04.805 --> 00:08:06.846
So for me, I agree with you.

00:08:06.846 --> 00:08:13.247
He needs someone more of a leader that would say, hey, this is how you do things as a man, or this is what we do.

00:08:15.295 --> 00:08:17.985
Yeah, so yeah, I think we're all in agreement on that.

00:08:17.985 --> 00:08:20.519
Do any Bible verses come out?

00:08:20.519 --> 00:08:21.704
Stick out to you on that?

00:08:22.314 --> 00:08:24.779
I think about 1 Timothy 5,.

00:08:24.779 --> 00:08:35.368
I think it is where he says you know, don't rebuke an older man, but encourage him as a father, Older women as mothers, younger men as brothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

00:08:35.368 --> 00:08:50.095
And so Paul is laying out for Timothy a familial type, familial way of thinking about church relationships and saying you need fathers and brothers and you need mothers and sisters.

00:08:50.095 --> 00:08:55.486
And so for him also like do I think he needs to be mentored by a woman?

00:08:55.486 --> 00:08:57.621
No, but do I think he needs healthy?

00:08:57.982 --> 00:08:59.789
female relationships in the church.

00:09:00.091 --> 00:09:00.995
Yes, absolutely.

00:09:01.014 --> 00:09:08.537
Yeah, and I, like Titus, two older women Likewise are to exhibit behavior fitting for those who are holy, not slandering, not slaves, excessive drinking, but teaching was good.

00:09:08.537 --> 00:09:20.576
In this way, they will train the younger women to love their husbands, love their children, to be self-controlled, pure, fulfilling their duties at home, kind, being subject to their own husband so that the message of god may not be discredited, which is the one that women everywhere, uh, either love or hate.

00:09:20.736 --> 00:09:25.027
Actually, um, but yeah so I do feel like that's, that's a powerful point of like.

00:09:25.027 --> 00:09:35.609
You need same-sex relationships, I think, to spur you on in some ways, because uh and you need to grow through them and they're going to help you grow in, whatever your uh sin struggle is.

00:09:35.769 --> 00:09:36.048
And the.

00:09:36.048 --> 00:09:43.654
The question, you know I think, this person's asking is like okay is, is there a danger, though, of him having close male relationships?

00:09:43.654 --> 00:09:52.184
If that's the thing, just like it's like you know, you wouldn't be like hey, cody, go do one-on-one discipleship with some young woman, just you and her right, yeah, yes.

00:09:52.184 --> 00:09:56.649
That is just not wise, and so you put yourself in that position.

00:09:56.690 --> 00:09:57.591
Yeah, yeah.

00:10:01.514 --> 00:10:33.063
So you know, I think that question coming from that, but just saying like that's where a mentoring relationship of an older man, you know, but also encouraging him to have uh, uh and again we're, we're using him as an example, but you know this principle more generally, um, to have healthy male friendships and set boundaries set boundaries, be open, confess sin, repent from it, you know, and uh and expect freedom, you know like you know, aaron, uh, your wife Aaron had, she had a girl's night and they started talking to this one dude that was in the military and then she texted me and said, hey, uh, I can't remember his name.

00:10:33.063 --> 00:10:36.905
Hey, you and you guys have are both veterans, military background.

00:10:36.905 --> 00:10:39.586
He'd be a great person to kind of get and I really appreciate it.

00:10:39.586 --> 00:10:40.873
Like that was like she did.

00:10:40.873 --> 00:10:43.283
You know, she ministered in the moment to that guy.

00:10:46.778 --> 00:10:48.038
And then she sort of passed it on.

00:10:48.058 --> 00:10:48.839
Did she well, and I?

00:10:48.859 --> 00:10:53.883
was actually kind of like mind blown and impressed and confused at the same time.

00:10:55.364 --> 00:10:55.804
It was interesting.

00:10:55.804 --> 00:11:22.745
I was like, wow, that's kind of wild Anyway, but I do feel like, so let's get into this specific question, because this woman is, she has a husband who is far from God, and I don't know if the person that she's invited to church is a male that has homosexual attractions, so so she feels like, oh, I guess I'm, I'm the answer to this guy's uh struggle, cause I'm, you know, I'm married and it's not a big deal and I don't see anything, you know whatever.

00:11:22.745 --> 00:11:34.375
And I would say like, yeah, invite him to church, um, but I would have some sort of boundary, emotionally, uh, and obviously I think physical probably might not be the hard part.

00:11:34.375 --> 00:11:53.024
The emotional boundary goes both ways, um, and because you just got, you can't, just because someone is like, um, in your eyes, homosexual, it doesn't mean god's not gonna rearrange their desire feelings right and go well, like we're attracted to, like women, and you know I'm not gonna pray that I don't want to be right attracted to that, but you know, I know.

00:11:53.044 --> 00:11:54.432
I'm not going to pray that I don't want to be attracted to that.

00:11:54.432 --> 00:11:58.503
But you know, I'm married, I'm not going to cross that line, right?

00:11:58.503 --> 00:12:00.942
I don't look at that that way, right?

00:12:00.942 --> 00:12:14.134
But if you're not married, putting up boundaries and guarding your heart and doing all those things, you could easily fall very quickly, exactly, and I think the lady asking the question, she's invited a male to come to church.

00:12:14.154 --> 00:12:14.756
That's a big win.

00:12:14.756 --> 00:12:21.095
You should do that when you're looking to bless your neighbors, bless your coworkers, bless the people in your neighborhood.

00:12:21.095 --> 00:12:24.163
That's a great thing to do.

00:12:24.163 --> 00:12:29.416
It's just I'm not going to say it's danger, I won't be like, but I do think it.

00:12:29.797 --> 00:12:39.529
You know the wise person, you know you build a web of relationship and you you can only go so far, uh, with a person of the opposite sex and not dishonor your husband.

00:12:39.529 --> 00:12:40.811
Yeah, I agree.

00:12:40.811 --> 00:13:08.885
Yeah, so, um, but I do love the question and I think it's something that, as our culture becomes more progressive, I guess, where there's more and more men who are at home and more and more women in the workplace and that can get confusing that we lay down as people who are meeting you right where you're at, but sort of challenge you to kind of go back to.

00:13:08.885 --> 00:13:19.379
I don't want to say it's going back to more traditional roles, but going to biblical roles that God has instituted for men and women and being a difference and a light in a culture that is so dark.

00:13:19.379 --> 00:13:21.764
Yeah, yeah, that's good.

00:13:21.764 --> 00:13:23.107
Yeah, I think so.

00:13:23.107 --> 00:13:27.301
All right, any other thoughts on any of that, not that question.

00:13:28.169 --> 00:13:43.280
Yeah, I would say just like especially, you know, if your husband's far from God and there's a barrier there, you really don't want to be building close friendships with other men and you know, hand that off.

00:13:43.280 --> 00:13:45.216
So, hey, invited church.

00:13:45.216 --> 00:13:46.855
Hey, here's Cody.

00:13:47.490 --> 00:13:52.472
But what if that guy is struggling with homosexuality?

00:13:52.594 --> 00:13:55.460
I think that becomes an extra thing, right uh?

00:13:55.559 --> 00:14:05.663
so then it's like well, there's no, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, like real type of romance ever sure, but I do think it's again.

00:14:05.683 --> 00:14:16.855
I think there's a guardian, the heart both ways, yep, and there's a certain part of I don't know how to put this, but you want to honor your spouse even though your spouse may not care, right, and all that.

00:14:16.855 --> 00:14:19.119
There's a certain honoring of your spouse.

00:14:19.129 --> 00:14:23.491
I think Adrian probably one of the things I grew the most in from my being single to being married.

00:14:23.491 --> 00:14:25.274
There's a certain amount of I used to.

00:14:25.274 --> 00:14:26.596
This is so bad.

00:14:26.596 --> 00:14:31.523
My mom would always say give him a thrill, chris, you know like, and so like, you know, make a girl feel good.

00:14:31.523 --> 00:14:49.232
And I, you know, I learned early on when I gave a girl a thrill, even if there was like no chance or whatever, that was not, it was not honoring to Adrian, and so I quickly learned over time that that there's a certain way to interact with the opposite sex that is honoring to your spouse.

00:14:49.232 --> 00:14:56.277
And I think that's the part where I think some people really need to grow in to really experience the fullness that God has for us.

00:14:56.277 --> 00:14:59.884

Thanks so much for watching.
